If It’s Not Published… It Doesn’t Count

I’m done saying “I’m working on it.” This is the day I started proving it.

Yesterday someone said something simple.

We always wonder what you actually do.”

And then…

We know you’re working on a lot of things… we’re just waiting to see them.”

They weren’t criticizing me. They weren’t trying to make a point. They were just telling the truth.

And if I’m being honest… it’s not just their truth. It’s mine.

I’ve had ideas. A lot of them. Good ones. Some even great ones.

Ideas for books. Ideas for programs. Ideas for content. Ideas that made people lean in when I talked about them.

And for years… decades even… my most consistent output has been one sentence:

I’m working on it.”

Not finishing it. Not publishing it. Not sharing it.

Working on it.

Now let me be clear…

I’ve done things in my life. Real things. Meaningful things. Things I’m proud of.

But alongside all of that, there’s a long, quiet list of things I talked about far more than I ever produced.

And that’s the part no one sees.

Until someone says something honest.

This morning, I reached for a different cup.

Not the one I always use.

This one.

Black on top. White on the bottom. Two simple words:

GAIN
GAP

And it stopped me.

Because without even realizing it… that cup is exactly how I’ve been living.

The bottom half… the white… that’s the GAP.

That’s where ideas live. Plans. Intentions. “I’m going to…” “I’m working on…” “Soon…

It looks clean. Full of possibility.

But it’s empty.

The top half… the black… that’s the GAIN.

That’s what’s real.

What’s finished. What’s shared. What’s actually out in the world.

That’s the only part that holds anything.

And here’s what hit me this morning…

I’ve spent a lot of time in the bottom half of the cup.

Talking about what I’m going to pour. Thinking about it. Planning it. Even getting excited about it.

But not actually filling it.

So this is the shift.

Not a new plan. Not a better system. Not another idea.

A line in the sand.

I’m no longer measuring myself against what I intend to do.

I’m measuring myself against what I publish.

Because if it’s not published… it doesn’t count.

That might sound harsh.

It’s not.

It’s freeing.

Because it removes the illusion. It closes the gap between who I say I am and what I actually do…

It replaces “almost” with evidence.

And here’s what I know…

This isn’t just me.

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you have your own list. Things you’ve talked about. Things you’ve planned. Things you’ve said you’re going to do.

And maybe you even believe you’re close.

But close doesn’t count.

Published counts... Shared counts…. Finished counts….

So today…

This isn’t about how I feel. This isn’t about being ready. This isn’t about getting it right.

This is about filling the cup.

One pour at a time. One piece at a time. One publish at a time…

And if you feel even a little bit of yourself in this…

Don’t wait for the perfect version. Don’t wait until it’s ready. Don’t wait until it’s clear.

Fill the cup.

Because at the end of the day…

You don’t get to measure your life by what you thought about doing.

You measure it by what you actually put into the world.

Today…

This is mine.
