The Tale Of My Scale

What I Thought Was the Enemy... Became My Greatest Teacher

For most of my life, the scale was something I feared.

It was the judge.

The punisher.

The one number that could ruin my day—or make me believe, for a fleeting second, that I was finally “back on track.”

But the truth?

The scale didn’t lie… it just didn’t tell the whole story.

The Biggest Loser… and the Biggest Shift

Back in October 2010 and ending in May 2011, I stepped onto a scale on national television—shirtless, vulnerable, and 100% ready to change my life.

I lost -181 pounds.

Making it to the coveted Final 4... as the last man standing.

And I walked off that stage with a body I barely recognized… but a mind still wired to fear the numbers.

What no one saw was what happened next: every day for 15+ years...

The real work.

The internal shift.

The years of staying the course when no cameras were rolling, and no prize money was on the line.

And the surprising twist?

I never stopped stepping on the scale.

But this time, I did it differently.

I Upgraded My Scale—and My Mindset

Instead of obsessing over my weight, I started tracking:

  • Water

  • Muscle

  • Fat

  • Total weight

And day by day, something incredible happened:

I stopped judging myself based on a single number…and started learning from the whole story.

The Scale Became a Mirror—Not a Weapon

That shift changed everything.

  • I stopped chasing “skinny” and started building strength.

  • I stopped fearing food and started feeding my body what it needed.

  • I stopped quitting every time the weight bounced up a pound or two…
and began to understand the natural rhythm of real body change.

This is the tale of my scale.

It’s not perfect.

It’s not linear.

But it’s mine.

And now, it can be your tale too.

Why I’m Sharing This

For over 15 years, 29K posts, I’ve shared The Tale Of My Scale on @my_last_100_lbs, Instagram.

And since July 2021, I’ve shared over 1,500 of my daily body composition results, not just what I weighed everyday for over 15 years.

Not out of obsession—out of curiosity.

Out of accountability.

Out of respect for the story, my body tells me if I’m willing to listen.

That’s what all things “Going Beyond The Scale” is about.
