Why You Need to Know What Your Body Is Made Of
It’s not about weight loss. It’s about self-awareness.
For years, we’ve been taught to obsess over one number: weight.
It shows up on the bathroom scale. On the doctor’s chart. In our heads. Day in, day out.
But what if I told you that number is just the start of the story?
What if your body’s real stats—your muscle, fat, and water—were quietly shifting while you focused on the wrong scoreboard?
Welcome to the world of body composition.
And trust me… once you learn what your body is made of, you’ll never look at yourself—or your health-the same way again.
This All Started in a Way I Didn’t Expect
Over the past decade, I have conducted over 10,000 one-on-one body composition consultations with individuals ranging from 18 to 96 years old, all of whom recognized that understanding their body composition would aid in weight loss.
When I first started conducting consultations, knowing one's body composition was a great tool for anyone who wanted to lose weight.
Until in March 2019, when I started conducting one-on-one body composition consultations at VaynerMedia with their associates as part of a well-being initiative. This experience created a fantastic mindset shift for me, allowing me to experience firsthand that knowing one's body composition meant so much more to them than just their weight.
Most of the associates were young, ranging in age from 21 to 30 years old, and in relatively good physical shape. Maybe 5% of them were curious about body composition because they wanted to lose weight.
But the other 95%? They weren’t looking to change anything. They were just curious.
And that’s what shocked me.
I thought this would be a one-and-done for them. Something fun. A novelty.
But something surprising happened.
They stepped on the scale, saw their numbers, and a new kind of awareness lit up in their eyes.
It wasn’t fear. It wasn’t shame.
It was fascinating.
Body Composition Has a “Whoa” Factor
Here’s what I learned working with hundreds of VaynerMedia associates over 6+ years:
Everyone Was Curious (Even If They’re Nervous First)
No matter what shape they were in, every single person who stepped on the scale was fascinated.
The number on the scale meant something entirely different now.
They could see how much of their body was muscle, fat, and water.
Suddenly, it wasn’t just about losing or gaining weight.
It was about understanding what was going on underneath it all.
Nobody Had a Clue What Their Body Was Really Made Of
They knew their bodies… but they didn’t know their numbers.
And once they did, it was like flipping on a light switch.
It didn’t matter if the numbers were great or not-so-great.
Because once they saw them, they finally had a baseline.
A starting point.
And that changed everything.
They Told All Of Their Teammates About It
This part still makes me smile.
After their consultation, they’d go back to their desks, find a teammate, and say:
“You’ve gotta do this. It’s so cool. You’ll love it.”
Not a weight loss pitch.
Not a medical concern.
Just curiosity—spreading like wildfire.
So, Why Should You Know Your Body Composition?
Even if you never want to lose a single pound, here’s why this matters:
It’s Your Baseline Health Score
Like a speedometer for your body, it shows you what’s going on under the hood.
Without it, you’re just guessing.
You’ll Learn Something You Never Knew
And you’ll want to learn more.
Because once you see your numbers—muscle, fat, water—you start asking better questions about your body.
It Tracks What Life Does to You
Holiday stress?
Marathon training?
Vacation mode?
It all shows up in your numbers.
And that makes body composition one of the most real-time health markers out there.
Muscle Health is the Hidden Hero
Everyone talks about fat loss.
But the real long game?
Preserving and strengthening muscle, especially as you age.
It’s One of the Easiest Health Check-Ins
No blood. No needles. No labs.
Step on. Get your stats. Walk away with insight.
This Isn’t About Weight Loss. It’s About Self-Discovery.
What I’ve come to believe is this:
Knowing what your body is made of should be just as common as getting your blood pressure checked or your annual labs drawn.
This is a powerful, personal, and surprisingly fun way to see your body in a new light—no matter what plan, program, protocol, or lifestyle you follow.
And the beauty of it?
You don’t have to be perfect.
You don’t have to be trying to “change.”
You just have to be curious enough to learn.
The Invitation
If you’ve never had your body composition measured before, I hope this inspired you to find out.
Maybe you’ll ask someone you know if they’ve used a body composition scale and if they like it.
Maybe you’ll leave a comment below asking what scale I recommend (I’d love that).
Or maybe, just maybe, you’ll grab a good-quality consumer-grade scale and start a new habit of checking in once or twice a year, just like you do with your doctor.
No pressure.
Just curiosity.
That’s where it all starts.
Let’s change how we measure success.
Let’s start with what you’re made of.
